Writing and Verbal Communication Skills for Personnel Who Use ESL
80% of those who fail at work do so because they do not communicate effectively. Add to that individuals who have difficulty in being able to express their knowledge because English is their second language and the need to improve becomes on of necessity. This course will offer a high degree of skills to utilize the potentials inherent in those who come from a foreign country.
Basic English Course For ESL:
Two Days (2) - 1.6 CEUs
Content:
Individuals who come to America from foreign countries often have problems mastering the spoken/written English. As a result they may be unable to communicate their full knowledge to peers and supervisors and also have difficulty in presenting themselves at work and to the public.
While they struggle with English, highly intelligent engineers, scientists, etc., from Asia, Middle East, Latin America etc., may be unable to advance in their careers and find themselves unfairly passed over for promotion. This basic English course will enable the participant to improve written communication and achieve their full potential in a work setting. The course includes the following elements:
- Eliminating common mistakes in usage
- Learning correct agreement - subjects, verbs, pronouns, etc.
- Overcoming common spelling errors
- Learning the fine points of punctuation
- Developing paragraphs with topic sentences
- Mastering irregular verbs and verb usage
- Diagramming sentences to master writing more easily
- Expanding sentences with phrases and clauses
- Correcting run on sentences
- Distinguishing sentence and sentence fragments
- Using modifiers correctly - adjectives - adverbs
A one day followup will occur three months later to review material in the course and homework assignments, and the reinforce the content.
Verbal Communication Skills For ESL:
Two Days (2) - 1.8 CEUs
Content:
- Build confidence - self esteem
- Techniques to overcome difficulties that a second language presents
- Exercises for voice development-pitch-diction and pronunciation
- Understand the culture as it relates to interpersonal communications
- Delivery techniques of pacing - reading, etc., that will improve the reception of the message, whether one on one of before a group
- Overcoming butterflies and symptoms of nervousness
- Making the presentation win-win
- Reading your audience
- Effectively using visual aids
- Handling the "difficult person"
- Proper use of the Q&A
The participant will receive a 1/2 inch videotape to use for reinforcement of the learning.
The instructor(s) will approach the transfer of learning with a complete understanding of the needs of the ESL student and how to satisfy their needs for successful transfer to the work place.
The two day program will be followed by independent work based on the course. Students will complete homework assignments and forward then to the instructor via e-mail for correction and comment. Assignments will then be e-mailed back to the students.
A one day followup will occur three months later to review material in the course and homework assignments, and to reinforce the process and be beneficial to the participant.
